It Started with a Simple Idea… and a Whole Lot of Fish
Grandpa Dave’s didn’t start as a business—it started as a passion project. I set out to build my own fish-based aquaponics system, imagining a perfect balance between fish and plants, where one would naturally nourish the other. But reality had other plans.
I quickly learned that too many fish overwhelmed the grow beds, forcing me to filter out and waste precious nutrients. But when the plants thrived, I found myself short on nutrients, struggling to feed them without endangering the fish.
That’s when I started thinking:
“What if I could save the extra nutrients for when I needed them?”
I experimented with creating a liquid fish-based fertilizer, but it turned out to be more trouble than it was worth. Liquid fertilizer was hard to ship, impossible to store long-term, and difficult to apply evenly. Worse, it delivered nutrients too quickly, overwhelming plant roots rather than sustaining them.
But then came a moment of inspiration—or maybe just pure stubbornness.
From Failure to Breakthrough
One day, I held a bowl of pure fish poop in my hands and thought, “If I could just dry this out and preserve its nutrients, I’d have the perfect fertilizer.”
So, I tried everything to dehydrate it.
🔥 Traditional heat drying? It killed off a huge percentage of the micro-nutrients, leaving me scraping the edges of hot pans.
❄️ Freeze-drying? It destroyed delicate biological activity, leaving behind an inferior product.
I almost gave up—more than once. But something kept bringing me back to the idea that there had to be a better way.
And then it hit me.
After years of trial and error, I developed a completely new way to dry fish-based nutrients—without using conventional heat or freeze-drying. This proprietary process preserved 100% of the beneficial bacteria and micro-nutrients while even enhancing nutrient content.
